Antique Kitchen Gadgets

Check out these very cool old kitchen utensils I found in my recent thrift store travels: I'm not sure what this one is, though (I had to have it anyway). It looks somewhat like a wood graining tool for doing a faux wood finish. Anyone have any ideas what it might have been used for?

The back of it is stamped with a patent date of November 6, 1906. I was really intrigued by how old it is. And it was only $1.50, so I splurged. :)And I might even put this old fashioned whisk to use. There was a woman standing next to me while I was admiring this in the store. She said, "My mother used to use one just like that. She recently passed away. She was 101 years old." Sold. And some old, weathered tongs (for lack of the proper term) for removing hot canning jars. Not that I ever do any canning. But the wood on the handles was just really smooth and time worn and again, I was intrigued by the age of this. Makes me wonder about the person who used this and what their story was???

And yes, a shameless plug for my friend Marj's aprons! (this one is now hanging in my kitchen). I thought it was appropriate for this post, since undoubtedly the woman who used these utensils wore one, too.

That tool was used for wood graining.Back in the day when people could not afford the more expensive wood they would faux paint a grain on cheaper wood to make it look like it was costly.

I love antiques, I buy and sell, but the fun is in the hunt! I think you will agree.

What great finds. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for those kind of things to hang on the walls once I get the interior painted!

The older kitchen utensils are much better than the stuff you find now. I searched for almost a month to find an old style potato masher...I kept breaking the newer, cheaper ones.

Amazing! If those utensils could talk, think of the stories they might tell.

The canning tool is called a jar lifter. I love old kitchen utensils and pick them up whenever I see them. Etsy has a great selection of them too.

Those are nice and old! The last one looks like something they would have use to pick up a bottle out of boiling water, but did they do that back then? Who knows! Good find though!

Great scores! After my mom passed, I got most all of her old kitchen stuff; one of which was a set of pots and pans probably at least 40 years old, but still in great working condition. I use them now and when the lid lifts to let the steam out of what I'm cooking, it's the same sound I remember growing up...that's something that's hard to replace.
