I Love Elmo

And I'm not talking about the tickle-me version...

I'm talking about this guy:
This is my friend Marj's llama.  Isn't he awesome?  I couldn't wait to meet him on my visit to Maine.  I've never seen a llama up close and in person.  (Oh, by the way --- he already had the name Elmo when Marj got him.  I knew she would want you to  know that!)

Llamas are great livestock protectors.  Apparently, Elmo is no exception.  These are his "girls" and he takes his job protecting them seriously.

So much so, that he was a little freaked out by me trying to get close to any of them.  I told Marj, "I'm going to hug him before I leave here".  Her reply: "Yeah, good luck with that one."

And she was right.  No llama hugging occurred.  All I got was this:

And this was as close as he'd let me get.

Maybe next time Elmo?  Yeah, definitely next time.

Elmo is adorable but he does look rather um, stern? I would want to hug him too tho.

When Elmo's on the job, no fraternization is allowed.

Strange looking animals but really interesting. I have seen one up close before in New Mexico. I didn't know they were the protectors of livestock...God does have a plan for these hair creatures. No hugs...no tickles either from Elmo.

Now when I see Llamas, I can't help but think of the one in the movie 'Napoleon Dynamite" - Elmo doesn't have a thing for steak does he?!!!

What a handsome fellow. I love llamas. They're so regal and stately. The secret to getting a furry llama kiss (they don't actually kiss, just tickle you with their whiskers) is to drink coffee first. They're really drawn to the smell of coffee breath. Go figure. For next time. I'm rooting for you & the hug thing.

Speaking of Elmo, he is not only non huggy he is also very very smart. I tried to sneak his worming medication into little "grain balls" and he sorted them all out and left them in his bucket for me. He totally protested them. So this weekend he won't be happy when Joe holds him and I gag it down his throat.
