Piper

There's a lot of chatter and debating today on Facebook and other social media sites about the bill that President Obama recently signed into law which now allows slaughter of horses in the U.S. for human consumption (mostly shipped outside of the country).  It's been weighing heavy on my mind.

I just wanted to share a few photos of Piper, who was rescued by Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary, when she was just 6 months old and headed to slaughter.
Thankfully, due to their efforts, she did not end up on some Europeans' dinner plate.  It's hard to think about, but sometimes we have to force ourselves to think about things like this in order to be compelled to do something about it.  Please take a moment today to call the White House Comment line. The number is 1-202-456-1111. This is not a recording, there are real operators answering and taking down your comments.  State your objection to this legislation and request that it be repealed.

XOXO, Piper and Bridget

This is horrible. I cannot believe he would do this and others would sponsor/go along with it. Talk about inhumanity to animals.

I made the phone calls Bridget, I wrote the letters and signed the petitions. I am sickened by it.

I don't like it either!!! but I also hated the way horses were being shipped to Canada and Mexico crowded together, not watered or fed. many of them dying on the trip! I just don't know if there is any human way to deal with this issue at a time when so many horses no longer have a home that can afford to keep them :(((

I think eating animals, any animal is digusting and horribly cruel...we humans think of ourselves as so important and that we have the right to eat anything we want, it's extremely sad. But atleast your sweet horse ended up in a good place....hang onto that. But I totally know what you mean when you say it's weighing heavily on your mind...I send petition letters every year in oppostion of the seal hunt that happens every year...it just hurts my heart and makes me ashamed to be a Canadian...because the old adage is true, the greatness of a country is reflected in how that country treats it's animals.

I've never really looked at a horse as an animal of consumption...to me it just doesn't make sense.

I don't agree with this bill either...ridiculous and inhumane.

Sadly I disagree. While I myself would not eat a horse I don't think that ending slaughter is the right solution RIGHT NOW.
It didn't "fix" anything when it was illegal, in fact it compounded existing issues and made things even worse. The horse industry needs to get itself in shape... sadly it is a huge knotted up puzzle and will take a lot of time to resolve.

I read about this, it's disgusting. I don't know how any of this would ever end, you know it goes on and the animals suffer. But to lift a bill to make it easier after doing without it, where's he getting his pressure from?? there has to be someone driving it, and I am sure it's all about $$. Hate it hate it

The treatments of a lot of equines is inexcuseable today.

People have forgotten where I country would be without them.

http://www.ahdf.org Please check out this site and support SB 311 to end this horrific practice. This is not an end to a problem it creates a whole new can of worms, people breeding just for this, pets being stolen and sold ... it is not a solution to anything.....

So glad she was saved. Its such a sad thing. Plus horses that are neglected, mistreated or starved. If i ever win the lotto, my wish would be to start my horse/farm animal rescue. A friends 18 yr old gelding was also saved from a meat auction. Hes a sweet boy too! Its great to hear good stories!
