Chicken Ear Lobes

First off, let me say that I didn't even know they had ear lobes.

My dad requested this blog post on the chickens.  One of his favorite things to do when he comes to visit is collect the chicken eggs.  If I know he is coming, I leave the eggs in there for him, otherwise he is disappointed.  :)

But back to the ear lobes....

A hen with white ear lobes will lay white eggs, a hen with red or brown ear lobes will lay brown eggs.  Who knew?  We didn't have chickens when I was growing up so our eggs came from the store and they were always white.  I remember seeing a brown egg for the first time as a kid and thinking how weird that was.  Now brown eggs are normal.

We only have 3 hens, and all 3 have red lobes, thus we only get brown eggs.

Since this post is at my dad's request, I also have to add a bit of trivia.  Dad is always coming up with interesting information about one thing or another.  His latest bit comes from Gulliver's Travels (which I admit, I have never read).  He told me to look up specifically about the "Big-Enders" vs. the "Little-Enders".  Here is what I found:

In Lilliput, Gulliver finds that the tiny people are going to war with their neighbors over the right way to open a hard boiled egg - from the big or little end. This was basically the author, Jonathan Swift's, satire on the wars between England and France in his own time - which were based on points just as silly as the "Big-Enders" vs the "Little-Enders" and their quarrel.

Interesting.  So, which end is it?  I say, break it right in the middle....  problem solved.

Bunny Sunday

It's kind of a lazy Sunday around here today.  Nutmeg and Patches have the right idea:

Conserve energy today ~ take a nap!  Enjoy your Sunday everyone.

Gardner Canyon

My friend Brett and I had a GREAT ride the other day down in Gardner Canyon.  The weather was perfect, not too hot, but still sunny with a nice little breeze blowing.  And the views go on forever...
Brett, although she doesn't claim to be a cowgirl, loves riding and I can put her on any horse and not really have to worry about her.  Here she is with our big guy, Chini.
And me with our little girl, Sassy.
Gardner Canyon is a beautiful and relaxing place to ride with it's rolling hills and wide open spaces.  We are so lucky to live only 14 miles down the road from it.  The Arizona Trail, which is a hiking/horseback trail, runs from the Mexican border up through the middle of the state and ends near the border with Utah (I believe) and it runs right through the Canyon.
We came across this little meadow that was just full of wild sunflowers.  There were all kinds of butterflies and bees flitting around.  Photo op!

It was a perfect day on horseback, riding and chatting and catching up on things with an old friend and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  We never saw another person the entire day!  What could be better?  Days like that just don't come often enough.

Thursday Cowgirl Wisdom

What a plan!  I like it.

I think part of not growing old (either in mind, body or spirit) is not limiting yourself and getting out and doing those things that you truly want to and love doing.  No excuses, no putting it off till tomorrow, no worries.

Today, I'm going to do just that.  My friend is here visiting from North Carolina and we are taking the horses out for a day long trail ride.  I have the saddle bags packed with lunch and we're ready to hit the trail, wherever it may take us.  Should be a fun day!  Pics to follow...

Happy Trails!

Bunny Sunday

OK, MAYBE this is not the best treat for bunnies:
But who could resist this face???  Mmmmm.... orange push-up...
Maybe there's still some left in here...
That's OK, chewing up the tube is almost as good...
Treat yourself today!

Bunny Monday?

Oops!  Every now and then Sunday just gets away from us.  There's only so many hours in the day for naps, eating fresh herbs from the garden and running around doing binkys...sometimes we forget our Bunny Sunday duty.  :)

So, while the bunnies take a break from their fame, I'm sharing this pic taken by my friend and posted on her FaceBook page.  So cute how these wild bunnies are sharing a meal with their squirrel friend!

Hope you are all having a great Monday and it continues on through the week!

Today I woke up to find a note from a fellow Etsy artist, The Spirited Jewel, that she included me in her Etsy treasury paying tribute to the American Mustangs.

Check out these great horse inspired creations:

Bun-Cat

Rosie is a confused little kitty.  Her only friends are bunnies and at times it seems she really thinks she is one.

I caught her the other day lounging around with her bunny friends in their condo:

and making herself comfortable in the hay in their litter box...
Even checking out the second story:
I'm not so sure the bunnies are OK with it though:
They're kinda picky about who they let into their inner circle...
Happy Bunny Sunday!

Hummingbird Invasion

The hummingbirds took over our patio yesterday afternoon.  No sooner had I refilled the feeder when they converged in full force.  A very cool sight to see~  check it out:

Enjoy your Friday and long holiday weekend everyone!
